Günümüzde insan sağlığında ulaşılan nokta, sadece hastaları bireysel anlamda iyileştirmek değil, aynı zamanda toplumu etkileyen kitlesel sağlık sorunlarına çok yönlü çözümler üretmek ve bunlarla mücadelede daha bilinçli toplumlar yetiştirmektir. İnsanoğlunun en önemli hedeflerinden biri, yaşamı uzatmak ve yaşam kalitesini arttırmaktır. İnsan yaşamı uzadıkça, yaşlılığa ait sorunlar önem kazanmakta ve bu durum toplumları hem sosyal, hem de ekonomik yönden olumsuz etkilemektedir. Ortalama yaşam süresinin uzaması sağlık açısından olumlu bir gösterge niteliğinde olmasına rağmen; kronik hastalıkların ve demansın (halk arasındaki adı ile bunama) çeşitli biçimlerde ortaya çıkmasına da neden olmaktadır.
